For sculptor Sonia Leimer, space is not a given entity but rather a malleable material to be shaped. Trained as an architect, she is interested in both built space and the urban fabric in which sociopolitical issues materialize. The series of Awnings, which she has been developing since 2019 and is inspired by the titular architectural elements, emerges from this interest. These structures are a common feature of densely built and populated metropolises such as New York, where they provide shelter from the sun and rain and invite people to linger. What intrigues Leimer about these ephemeral structures is the way they temporarily extend private space into the public sphere, creating a gray zone in which new spaces for action can be claimed. Based on an investigation into the typology of the forms and colors of shades, Leimer develops her Awnings as hybrids of architecture and sculpture, in which questions of coexistence and collective action are distilled.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Object art</schema:artForm><schema:copyrightHolder>© Bildrecht, Wien 2026</schema:copyrightHolder><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/95693/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></rdf:RDF>
