“In a way, the minimalist form of the sculpture was my response to the clash of two cultural perspectives,” says Indian-Austrian artist Rini Tandon in conversation with Helmut Draxler. During her studies with Nasreen Mohamedi in Baroda, Tandon was exposed to abstract art inspired by the philosophies of Zen Buddhism and Sufism. In Vienna, where she has lived since 1978, Post-Minimalism has been a defining influence on her sculptural practice. Formal reduction and a focus on materiality are characteristic of her works from the early 1990s. Tandon experimented with industrial construction materials and used opaque enamel paint to create a mirror-smooth yet sculptural surface effect. In „A Converging Place“, the geometric form of an oval is divided and rotated. Mounted so that they hover above one another, the halves just barely miss touching.
