The melancholy mood of this twilight scene is heightened by the ship tipped onto its side and the billowing smoke rising from a small church. Following independent studies of nature and six years working as a carpenter, turner, and blacksmith, Pietro Fragiacomo enrolled at the Venice Academia di belle arti in 1878. Thereafter he devoted himself to plein-air painting.
