  • In the Middle Ages, light was believed to be a symbol of the divine. Church windows grew to a vast size during the Gothic period letting in rays of sunshine to illuminate the congregation. Exquisite light effects were created by inserting colorful panes of glass into the windows. In addition to purely ornamental motifs, these were often adorned with stories from the Bible and the lives of the saints. The production of stained glass windows was therefore a vital artistic endeavor before panel painting became increasingly important in the Late Gothic period.
