  • In an effort to go beyond the internationally dominant movements of Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism that emerged after World War II, Erwin Thorn fundamentally questioned the concept of the panel painting, identifying perception and light as central concerns. Thorn’s works evolved from two-dimensional paintings to threedimensional sculptures. As a painted canvas object mounted on the wall, „Unform“ clearly retains elements of a painting, although its protrusions also make it into a sculpture. The artist’s seemingly organic works underscore his significant role in Austria’s conceptual Neo-Avant-Garde.
