In 1977, Gironcoli succeeds Fritz Wotruba as head of the School of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna; until his retirement in 2004, he exerts a defining influence over younger generations of visual artists. Defamiliarization, amalgamation, and encryption are the strategies with which he develops a complex universe of forms and symbols that culminates in monumental large-scale sculptures.
