  • What is the relationship between language, art, and the world around us? This is the question Josef Bauer explores in his sculptural works and installations. After completing agricultural training and attending business school, Bauer studied painting at the art school in Linz from 1956 to 1964. Letters, words, real objects, and their representations are key materials in his installations. Place Setting for One Person demonstrates his in-depth exploration of the various levels of language, writing, and image, as well as the development of a new vocabulary through Bauer’s arrangement of the individual elements as in a poem: a spoon, the image of a fork, a cast of a loaf of bread, the outline of a chair, and two inscriptions—Sessel, or “armchair,” and Messer, or “knife.” Each element depicts reality in a different way.
