At a young age, Rudolf von Alt repeatedly joined his father, history and landscape painter Jakob Alt, on journeys through the Danube and Alpine regions as well as the territories of the Habsburg Monarchy. During these trips, he painted numerous views whose detailed naturalism not only demonstrates significant artistic quality but also lends them topographical value. As in this painting of the Gothic monument in Nuremberg known as the Beautiful Fountain, von Alt’s atmospheric depictions convey a vivid image of everyday life in the nineteenth century. Even in his later years, the painter remained interested in the latest developments in art. In 1897 he was one of the founding members of the Vienna Secession and became its honorary president that same year.
