Painting on limewood48281The man immortalized in this meticulously detailed portrait can be clearly identified from an inscription on the reverse: The sitter is a certain Jobst Seyfrid, who is documented in the sources as a painter in Passau. This was the location of Rueland Frueauf the Elder’s flourishing workshop. One of the first painters in German-speaking Europe to sign his works, Frueauf confidently monogrammed this portrait of Seyfrid with his initials “R F” at the top of the image.
