Her older husband Mathias (1765–1845), on the other hand, is wearing plain black. And it is to him, not to her mother, that their daughter Maria (1831–51) turns. Behind her, the couple hold hands as a sign of their attachment. Mathias is willing to let his wife take center stage, while he assumes the role of the caring father.
