The lake is as smooth as glass; only at the water’s edge, by the boat, and in the middle distance where the steeply sloping foothills of the Sarstein jut into the lake, is the surface of the water slightly rippled. It is early morning; a haze is still hanging over parts of the lake like a fine veil. Near a cabin two women are working on a boat. They are conventional staffage figures, “embellishments” like the cabin that Steinfeld added to populate the scene. He did not want to omit them, unlike Ender who showed no traces of human existence in his picture. The work of Steinfeld, Ender, and other landscape painters in the Biedermeier period contributed significantly to tourists discovering the Alps. Although the section that their paintings reproduce usually appears to have been chosen at random, it was in fact always selected deliberately.
