As the balloons expand, an otherwise invisible bodily process becomes visible, while the sound of Keep On Keepin’ On (for Nile) moves in waves through the installation, establishing a persistent rhythm throughout the room. The protagonists are all Black, and breathing here is more than just a bodily act. Against the backdrop of the precarity of Black existence, it becomes a gesture of individual and collective self-assertion, of reclaiming space, and ultimately of liberation—a symbolic sigh of relief and the ability to continue breathing. The immersive video-and-sound installation was created for the 2023 Liverpool Biennial.
