About a decade after Empress Elisabeth’s death in 1898, the young sculptor Ilse Beatrice Twardowski-Conrat created a bust of the monarch. Yet the pared-down sculpture in white marble reveals little about the sitter’s identity. Elisabeth’s legendary cascade of hair is concealed beneath a shawl pulled tightly across her cheeks and around her neck. Her head tilts downward, her expression serious and introspective. Twardowski-Conrat was one of the few women artists of her generation to achieve success in sculpture. Her works, including numerous busts and monuments, were exhibited at venues such as the Vienna Secession.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/634/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/8910/full</schema:image><schema:name>Kaiserin Elisabeth</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1903</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Rudolf Emanuel Ritter von Weyr, Elisabeth von Österreich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Rudolf Emanuel Ritter von Weyr</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Plaster</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/4851/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/9444/full</schema:image><schema:name>Empress Elisabeth</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1902</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Robert Weigl, Elisabeth von Österreich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Robert Weigl</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Plaster</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/6203/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/18147/full</schema:image><schema:name>Medal Commemorating the Death of Empress Elisabeth</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1898</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Stefan Schwartz, Elisabeth von Österreich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Stefan Schwartz</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Bronze</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Arts and crafts</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/12565/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/18158/full</schema:image><schema:name>Medal Commemorating the Death of Empress Elisabeth</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1898</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Stefan Schwartz, Elisabeth von Österreich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Stefan Schwartz</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Bronze</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Arts and crafts</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/12576/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/18160/full</schema:image><schema:name>Plaque with the portrait of Empress Elisabeth</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1898</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Stefan Schwartz, Elisabeth von Österreich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Stefan Schwartz</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Bronze</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Arts and crafts</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/12577/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/7372/full</schema:image><schema:name>Empress Elisabeth with Saint Bernard Dog</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1883</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Anton Romako, Elisabeth von Österreich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Anton Romako</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on wood</schema:artMedium><schema:description>
Empress Elisabeth of Austria (1837–1898) - better known as Sisi - exudes an almost feral quality in this painting. She seems motionless. Her skin is pallid. Her lengthy hair tied back with a diadem cascades down her body and upper arms. A pearl necklace wound repeatedly around her neck covers her décolletage. Her upper body is laced into a tight bodice. A shawl whose pattern is reminiscent of big cats’ fur conceals her lower arms. Her hands appear devoid of bones. In front of Elisabeth there is a Saint Bernard dog that had become her constant companion in the later years of her life. With his portrait of Empress Elisabeth, Romako once again broke with all pictorial conventions. It has nothing in common with traditional portraits of monarchs, which were always painted according to the same model. The picture was produced in Geneva, where Elisabeth liked to stay and was ultimately murdered in 1898. If at all, Romako had only seen her from a distance. Like most artists, he had to make do with photographs. We can be certain that Elisabeth never set eyes on Romako’s portrait.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/3213/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/19009/full</schema:image><schema:name>Huldigung der Sänger Österreichs an das Kaiserpaar am 27.
