Viennese artist Hugo Charlemont, who painted idyllic views of nature and floral still lifes, probably stepped away from the garden path to do so. This angle would not provide a full view of his subject. As a result, the picture appears cropped and slightly off-center. Nevertheless, this framing of the subject lends the imagery a spontaneous, real quality. The summer hyacinths in the foreground add a sense of atmosphere and realism to the park scene. He showed little interest in the renowned Ringstrasse salon artist’s subject matters, however, preferring instead to paint scenes from the worlds of industry and manufacturing. In this scene, he offers a realistic insight into a hammer mill, where pieces of iron are being forged over an open fire. The painter illustrates the walls covered with tools and the tamped clay floor with great attention to detail. It is pleasing to observe how the embers of the fire and the sunlight penetrating through the open windows converge visually.
