This depiction is one of the first genre pictures in 19th-century Austrian painting. The story woven around the girl is centered on the figure herself rather than a particular event. Whether the young woman is brooding about money already lost on the lottery or considering investing in the sweepstake for Linz announced on the sign, is left open to question.

Peter Fendi did not choose this theme by chance but was referring to the boom in gambling, which made the lottery a hot topic of the time. When this picture was shown at the Vienna academy exhibition in 1830 it was highly acclaimed in the press. Berichten zufolge konnte der Kaiser den feierlichen Akt, der von mehreren Regengüssen begleitet war, von seinen Gemächern in der Hofburg aus durch ein Fenster verfolgen. — Der Ort des Ereignisses ist der äußere Burgplatz - das angeschnittene Gebäude am rechten Bildrand ist der aus der Burgflucht vorspringende Festsaal des belgischen Architekten Louis de Montoyer, in der Mitte der Darstellung sieht man das von Pietro Nobile errichtete äußere Burgtor mit dem Feldaltar, dahinter erstrecken sich die Vorstädte von Wien. — Peter Fendi schildert den liturgischen Moment der Wandlung, den die Teilnehmer der Messe kniend verfolgen. Die Rauchschwaden rechts verweisen auf die zur selben Zeit abgefeuerten Salutschüsse. Obwohl der Maler das Geschehen von einem Fenster des k. k.
