Hauser died in 1478 and is immortalized at the base with his wife and three children. In 1479 the painter Hans Siebenbürger received payment for this work, created to perpetuate the memory of the deceased. In the Late Middle Ages, people believed that prayers and intercessions would secure a quicker release for the souls of the dead from purgatory and thereby assist in their ascent to heaven.
