  • Remembering and preserving individual and collective histories and traditions are recurring themes in Iris Andraschek’s research-based artistic work. During a 2015 residency in Istanbul, Andraschek began her intensive exploration of the social, economic, and cultural consequences of the Syrian civil war. While some works address the population’s experiences of flight, Looted from Hama and Apameia focuses on the specific threat to cultural heritage. Countless artifacts looted during the plundering of sites in the region around Hama and the ancient, ruined city of Apameia continue to be sold on the illegal art market. In her restrained, seemingly scientific installation Andraschek reflects on the problematic entanglements of art, the market, and politics.
