  • Sarah Ortmeyer’s work transcends traditional disciplines such as sculpture and painting. The protective devil from the EMOJI SHADOW Series appears as a timeless icon that reveals new worlds through its resistance to the generic. In many Indigenous and religious cultures, as well as in medieval Christianity, devils and demons have been seen not only as threats but also as protectors. Their grotesque forms were the expression of universal duality in which good and evil were understood not as opposites but as inseparable forces. In her sculptures, the artist brings their familiar silhouettes of the digital icon into real life, allowing these beings to unfold a new presence. Instead of flat digital symbols, the protective figures are independent entities that reclaim the complexity of the devil figure.
