  • The title „Training Landscapes“ already provides a clear indication of the creative process behind Miao Ying’s paintings: Using a large dataset of landscape depictions, an artificial intelligence was “trained” to produce new images with similar motifs. The painterly translation of these artificially generated, so to speak newborn worlds is essential here. Not only does it make the otherwise fleeting appearance of the digital tangible; it also serves as a commentary on our engagement with artificial intelligence—the use of which need not necessarily be in direct competition with human practice. Rather, Miao uses the artificially generated images as an opportunity to highlight precisely those human characteristics that are often viewed negatively, such as imperfection, which finds its digital counterpart in graphical errors in image representation known as glitches.
