  • Light—understood both as a material with specific physical properties and as a complex of themes—forms a central component of Brigitte Kowanz’s artistic practice. From 1979 to 1984, Kowanz collaborated on a series of works with her then partner, artist Franz Graf, which brought together painting, drawing, language, and spatial concepts. Their shared interest in expanding traditional visual media into space, as well as in perception and communication, is reflected in the double-sided Balance of the Eye on the Horizon—The Horse’s Aura in the Dazzled Eye. In this work on paper, which was conceived as part of a spatial installation, Kowanz and Graf used fluorescent colors that glow under ultraviolet light. The immediate poetic effect is combined with a conceptual interest—already suggested in the title— in light-related phenomena of perception.
