  • Heinrich Dunst explores language as an artistic material in his conceptual, sculptural, and installation-based works. Through playful shifts and translations between word and image, he reveals the constructed nature of meaning. This theoretical approach is rooted in a profound engagement with concrete poetry as well as his own artistic socialization within Vienna’s Neo-Geo movement of the 1980s. The five-part work presented here combines image, text, and object: a photograph of a newspaper bearing the inscription “Je ne suis pas” (I am not), two elements featuring the words “the door” and “Objekt,” which are simultaneously text, message, and image, as well as a white and a black rectangle as pure forms. Drawing on René Magritte’s iconic 1921 painting Ceci n’est pas une pipe (This is Not a Pipe), Dunst shifts the relationship between an object and its pictorial translation. In doing so, he reflects on the impossibility of unambiguous representation and the distinction between the sign and the signified.
