Lost in thought, the actor Josefa Hortensia Füger (1766–1808) looks up from her book. She appears to be preparing for a role, though which role is not disclosed by her husband, the painter Friedrich Heinrich Füger. He concentrates on his wife’s face. The ruff, the cloth, and the shawl are all made of a gossamer fabric that is merely suggested. The same applies to the trees and the cloudy sky. Füger had traveled far, especially to Rome and Naples, before finally settling permanently in Vienna in 1783. He was appointed vice-director of the city’s academy before being promoted to director in 1795. Under his leadership, this came to rival the Paris Académie as Europe’s preeminent art institution.
