  • Das Bild entstand während der dritten Italienreise, die Tina Blau im Winter 1885/1886 unternahm. Es ist trotz fehlender Quellen nicht unwahrscheinlich, dass Tina Blau in Begleitung ihrer Münchner Freundin, der Malerin Veronika Maria Herwegen reiste, von der aus dem Jahr 1886 ebenfalls Bilder vom Forum Romanum in vergleichbarem Stil bekannt sind. Tina Blau hat das Bild nach 1910 nochmals überarbeitet und die ursprünglich im Vordergrund vorhandenen Figuren durch Ruinenstücke ersetzt [in der Liste von Pauline Wolf ist noch von Staffage die Rede].
