The captain of Capernaum falls to his knees before Christ, begging him to help his sick servant. Jesus hears his plea, cures the boy, and praises the captain’s faith. Such smaller paintings with biblical themes are frequently encountered in Franz Anton Maulbertsch’s early art. Characteristics of these works include the figures’ expressive faces, their features verging on caricature, and the contrast between dazzling light and dark shadows. Furthermore, the composition with its elaborate gestures and garments imbues the depiction with heightened drama.
