Wie schwierig die Händescheidung bei Paul Troger und Josef Ignaz Mildorfer zuweilen ist, zeigt die Zuschreibungsgeschichte dieser Ölskizze für ein Deckenfresko. Das Gemälde wurde 1912 für das Museum als Werk eines namenlosen Künstlers erworben. Im Bestandskatalog von 1980 schlug Elfriede Baum versuchsweise Mildorfer als Autor vor, nachdem zuvor Johann Evangelist Holzer, Caspar Franz Sambach und Franz Xaver Karl Palko in Erwägung gezogen worden waren. Franz Matsche brachte den Entwurf 1989 erstmals mit Troger und dessen Freskenauftrag für die Kirche der Englischen Fräulein in Sankt Pölten in Verbindung – eine seither nicht unangefochtene These, der in der jüngsten Forschung jedoch der Vorzug gegeben wird. — [Maike Hohn, 8/2019]
