  • The “articulated cloud” is one of the best-known works by Wolfgang Paalen, who was associated with the French Surrealists. The umbrella covered with natural sponges was shown at the legendary Surrealism exhibition in Paris in 1938 and became known throughout the world as a result of the many photographs taken of it. Paalen reshapes the umbrella, a phallic object In the Surrealist metaphorical language, with sponges, which have a female connotation. Beyond projections of male and female, the object—which absorbs water and offers protection at the same time—suggests a general interconnectedness of opposing levels of meaning.
