In the 1780s, the Augustinian Church in the heart of Vienna was remodeled and Maulbertsch was commissioned to paint a monumental fresco for the high altarpiece. Not even 100 years later, this was destroyed when the church was again altered in 1873. All that survives is this sketch for the wall painting. It conveys a clear idea of Maulbertsch’s composition: Saint Augustine is wearing bishop’s robes with his attribute, a flaming heart, floating before him. Multiple angels accompany him as he ascends to the Holy Trinity in heaven. Whereas Maulbertsch rendered the drapery precisely, the faces are only cursorily indicated in this sketch.
