The fur collar, blue headscarf, lace, and especially the face of Rosina Wieser have all been captured with breathtaking delicacy and precision. Waldmüller has missed nothing: neither the small asymmetries to be found in every human face, nor its fine wrinkles nor the slight reddish hue of the eyelids. Rosina Wieser was eighty-three when Waldmüller painted her in July 1820, according to the inscription on the reverse of the picture. Two months before, he had portrayed Rosina’s son Vinzenz. Vinzenz Wieser supported Waldmüller over several years. In Waldmüller’s own words he owed “his entire artistic training” to Wieser.
