  • Flamboyant identities that oscillate between genders, together with the playful fusion of high and low culture, kitsch and art history, are at the heart of Jakob Lena Knebl’s work. For the puppetlike figures Joan and John Boy, Knebl has meticulously crafted the individual body parts and joints. The viewer’s attention is immediately drawn to the androgynous-looking Joan, who wears a gold chain around the neck. Dangling from this accessory are four pendants modeled after a vulva, a penis, and breasts. The soft appearance of the pink leather skin contrasts sharply with the ceramic head, heightening the figure’s artificiality. Drawing on a variety of materials and references to cultural history—such as mannequins, sculptures, fetish objects, and children’s toys—Knebl also explores the role and function of the human body in space.
