  • Margarete Hamerschlag, a student of Franz Čižek, studied print, fashion, and set design from 1917 at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna. She was particularly successful from the early 1920s as a graphic artist. From 1924 to 1934 she lived in the Rosenhügel artists’ colony in Vienna. With her husband, the Loos student Joseph Berger, she moved to Palestine in 1934 and onward to London in 1936. When the National Socialists came to power, she broke off all connections with Austria. Hamerschlag worked successfully in London as a portraitist and illustrator. In Self-Portrait in Yellow, she presents herself confidently in colors that harmonize with her surroundings.
