  • As is well known, France’s republican system is founded on the three pillars of liberté (liberty), égalité (equality), and fraternité (fraternity). It has been reiterated by numerous monuments in public spaces, including the impressive Monument à la République in Paris by Léopold and Charles Morice (1883). In his work „Egalité & Egalité“, Philipp Timischl fragments and duplicates the figure of Marianne that crowns the monument. A still frame silk-screened onto canvas is directly juxtaposed with a time-lapse moving image shot from a fixed perspective. For a few seconds, the same image appears twice, while the rest of the loop shows traffic, the sky, and other parts of the monument. Timischl dramatizes and satirizes the static nature of the allegory in the political present, in a square that has been and continues to be the site of various social struggles, addressing the flexibility of the concept of equality, which rarely corresponds to the ideal of equality for all.
