  • Paolo Preinitsch (1762–1840) was from what is now Rosegg in southern Austria and made his fortune in Trieste through a haulage business. The horse-drawn carriages in the background refer to his profession and are a reminder of the transport connection between Vienna and Trieste, familiar today in the name of the major road Triester Bundesstrasse. The painter Giuseppe Tominz shows Preinitsch as a successful businessman, posing in front of his life’s work with an air of satisfaction. Tominz’s portraits are characterized by an exceptional elegance, lucid colors, and occasionally a merciless trueness to life, revealing similarities with the Viennese artist Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller.
